FOR THE JOY OF MONDAY

Denim Shift Dress, Joy - Same Here
No there is no Joy on Monday, I hate Mondays. In fact, I don't care much for Tuesdays either and Wednesdays used to be OK until people started to call it 'Hump Day'. The Joy comes from this gorgeous denim shift dress from online retailer Joy. As you probably know by now, I love anything with a little bit of a retro vibe, and the cut of this dress, with the patchwork denim is pure sixties. So a big thanks to the boyfriend for buying it for me.

Now before anyone says anything, yes I am aware of the faux pas made by a member of Joy's social media team on Twitter, the ignorant remarks made about bipolar disorder. In fact a well known mental health blogger was not impressed with my decision to purchase from Joy, even though it was purchased before the incident. This blogger certainly did not appreciate that as someone who has battled mental illness, I did not feel personally offended and outraged at the remarks. They even accused me of not challenging discrimination and that I was ignoring the harm such remarks can cause.

If this individual had visited my blog, they would have seen that I do my best to help others with mental illness by talking frankly and openly about my own situation. Hopefully, I have made at least one person feel less alone...

Were they upset that on asking my opinion that I was not going to play a victim? Or simply mad that someone with mental illness did not share their view and chose not to be offended by a few insensitive tweets that were apologised for? I don't know, what I do know is that their hurtful tweets to me, did not stop until someone else on Twitter stood up for me and spoke of 'Freedom of choice'.

It is my choice not to be offended and to accept Joy's apology. If I wrote off everyone who said something offensive or ignorant about mental illness, I wouldn't know anyone. I don't believe this is the answer, it is just a way to become more bitter at your own personal situation, angry at the world for the stigma still attached to mental illness. For me the answer is education, to make people more informed about mental illness, so things like Twitter-gate happen less. So no, I wont completely write of an entire company for the remarks of one individual, and just hope that the person who made them is better informed in the future.

I hope this one wasn't too wordy for you, I just wanted to get my feelings across. If you got bored part of the way through I do apologise and Happy Monday!!

  1. Looking so very dreamy in denim Gems! The style, cut and patchwork details all look so perfect on your beautiful frame and there you go rocking it to perfection ;) I really love everything about this dress on you! Absolutely loving the autumnal backdrop too, it contrasts against the dress so perfectly and your posing is on point! I also agree that Mondays definitely aren't likeable, (apart from Hollyoaks maybe...!) and Wednesdays really are such a "bleugh day". Let's here it for the weekend! <3

Whoever that toss-pot was, without a doubt they should know better than to treat people (least of all you) in such a vile way. Ironic that they can get offended that you are being a stronger, better person for ignoring the Joy remarks, whereas they are happy to bully and troll you on Twitter. So sorry you had to deal with a ***** like that! I'm hardly a Mitchell brother, but I have a temper like fire, so whoever wants to upset you can get through my flames first! In all seriousness, I really am sorry you had to deal with all that :'( Please know we all love, admire and have your back here. You are bloody amazing and don't ever let anyone tell you otherwise! And hell YES, you have helped a ton of people by being so honest and frank about mental illness. These past few months especially attest to that. I only begin to imagine the number of people you have surely made to feel less alone. Love you Gems xo

    1. Aww thank you Sophie, the pictures were taken at castle ruins in the centre of Newcastle. I'm really excited because they are opening fully to the public this month :)
As for the Twitter troll, I was really upset on the day, but in the end I felt sorry for them for having such a one-dimensional way of thinking so bad that they can't accept anyone elses point of view. It is definitely a way to isolate yourself from others.
Love you too sweetie :) xx

  2. I love the denim - I agree with Sophie (so won't write a massive post as she covered pretty much what I wanted to say) that you help so many people and shouldn't let one person dissuade you from what you do.

  3. This denim dress is adorable and we love that you stood up for what you thought was right and didn't stand down because someone else was pushy. It's just as noble to forgive as it is to "stand up for what you believe even if someone can't see that they can be the same thing.

  6. I think this whole mental illness issues to be the whole problem of mental illness. We're acting like we're poor victims, getting offended by stupid comments and dwelling into negativity. Why not look at the bright side? The funny side? If I have to talk about my disorder, I always talk about it with humor, I hate acting like I'm a drama queen, like it's some big deal, because it's fucking not! Bah, I've had it with people getting offended by everything! The internet has become a place for pussies...
I love this dress though, 10,000 points go to the boyfriend!

    1. I always talk about it with humour, because you have to get something out of it. If you can't laugh at your situation now and then, you have already lost the battle I think. I'm not a victim, no one did it to me, so why should I be one. Thanks for your support, you are my kindered spirit for sure :)

  10. Well I think the dress is super cute, love a good denim dress! Sorry you had to put up with Twitter rubbish, some people have a real problem when others don't share the same opinion as them. Whoever was being a n00b is just a bean! I think you're being very mature about the whole situation and trust me, you've definitely informed people like myself about mental illness which gives a better understanding of it rather than being angry and not properly explaining things x

  14. I love the dress and I don't think you have done anything wrong. I know a lady who suffers with bipolar and there is a lot of ignorance out there where mental health is concerned. great post x

  15. I can't believe that someone would be so insensitive. Ok, so they are annoyed over something but it's your decision to be offended or not be offended (and your penultimate paragraph is BRILLIANT! You hit the nail on the head!) and they're just being domineering if they think that that kind of tactics would make you do something different. I personally haven't heard about whatever this employee did, but it's one idiot person who made an insensitive comment who as you say should be educated, rather than the whole thing being targeted.x
